Es scheint zunächst , als hätten die Begierden, die Lust und Erotik begleiten, kein Ziel, außer der Erfüllung, als wären die Protagonistinnen in den Arbeiten des Fotografen Lucas Hopkins lediglich laszive Gespielinnen des Eros, die sich besinnungslos ihren Leidenschaften hingeben. Doch bei genauerer Betrachtung entpuppen sich vor allem die Aufnahmen weiblicher Begegnung als Erweiterung des immer noch sehr eingeschränkten sexuellen Fokus der Gesellschaft. Der Künstler will hier nicht etwa mit lesbischer Liebe provozieren, viel mehr erweitert sein Objektiv den Rahmen künstlerisch und ästhetisch adaptierbarer Sexualität und verschafft so seinem Publikum nicht nur neue Reize, sondern vor allem auch neue Genüsse.

People tell me that, on one hand, I can't take pictures of women the way I do and on the other hand, relate my pictures to a Chauvanism statement. I think that I can. My photographs are of women who are reaching inside themselves to portray their own sensual energy. This is not sexual exploitation but rather intimate revelation. None of my models are professional. They are women who most of us pass on the street without a second glance, virtually ignored. I chose this aspect of women because I'm good at encouraging it and then getting out of their way. I wanted to acknowledge women as the fountain of inspiration and true joy in my life. There is so much more. Some critics have called my work soft-core pornography or worse. That is OK because I've had an effect on them. (Nobody ever built a statue to a critic either.) Others say that mixing sex and religion is at least disrespectful and at its worst, blasphemous. I dont know why in either case. Religion has been mixing them for centuries. I'm after religious hypocrisy like a 16th Century English witch hunter. How come women can't be priests or rabbis? Many of my images are specifically shot through proprietary methods and instincts so that when printed on canvas, they appear as Old Masters paintings. Having my work appear as a painting has always been my quest. I will also tell you to take a longer moment to look at each image that appeals to you. The images are situational and have many levels of expression, especially the dark portraits. Spend the moment and the image will open for you like a flower. As for me personally, who cares. You either like the images that I produced in that moment of crystal clear clarity or you don't. All I can hope for is that the viewer see something that he or she did not know before.
